We’re all pet people at heart… or so I think. Caring about pets is the one true requisite of being a pet person. Being humane to animals. Being a pet person does not have to mean pet ownership. Rent-a-pet and foster pets are a growing trend for pet people who cannot commit to adopting a pet. Where people’s busy lifestyles preclude full-time pet ownership, these options provide a way for people to enjoy the companionship of a pet for a set period of time, be it a few days, weeks or months.

In Japan there are pet cafes where there are pets in residence… furry greeters if you will. The pets bring an added dimension and value to the comfort and relaxation of visitors and staff alike. The pets set a friendly tone and make people feel at home. Pets become part of the cafe family.

For those of you hankering to get a pet but always talking yourself out of it because you cannot make such a large commitment, there is another excellent solution. A visit to your local humane society will give you your answer. Many pet shelters are under-staffed due to budget constraints and are always on the look-out for volunteers to help in many different ways. Want exercise? Volunteer to take shelter dogs for a walk whenever you have time. Like to clean and care for a pet? You can help out cleaning cages and just petting the pets… they’re not in their element and could use a little TLC… some friendly and caring attention.

So don’t let a busy lifestyle prevent you from enjoying the delights of companion animals. With a little effort, you can have a part-time pet for little or no expense and make a difference to the dedicated staff at your local animal shelter, to some wonderful (homeless) pets… and to yourself!
