Happy Hoppers? Rabbit Show Jumping!
Dressage for super bunnies?
Okay. Last week we learned about training pet fish to do athletics like playing soccer and basketball. We’ve seen the Stupid Pet Tricks on the David Leterman Show, have seen dancing pet dogs and cats playing the piano by ear, but I honestly had no idea that there was such a thing as bunny hurdles or what I laughingly refer to as dressage for bunnies. A pet photo op if ever there was one!
I can’t even tell you what my search criteria was when I came upon this weird event on the Internet. Rabbits probably, but omigosh! The video I saw was from Denmark where they actually have rabbit show jumping as a public event… in an arena. Incredible! No, not because the rabbits jump… that is natural, but because it is an organized event. Yikes!
My first thought about this is What does the pet training look like and is it humane?
The rabbits I saw in this show seemed to be very good at jumping the various hurdles. They also seemed to be enjoying the exercise (though how would we really be able to know this…) and I guess it is a fun way to spend time with a pet rabbit. See what you think about this rabbit show jumping.
I went out to explore this topic a little more and came across some more great pet rabbit photos on another YouTube video, called Super Bunnies, that showed a lovely open hurdle course actually laid out on a street boulevard. The rabbit owner (I presume) had three very large and very cute loppers that did the course.
One of these huge rabbits is called Muffy and she has her own way of doing the course. When this large lazy rabbit came to a hurdle, instead of jumping over it would remove the lower rung of the barricade and hop through that. This was a laugh out loud (lol) moment to be sure. Check out these super bunnies for yourself.
So, there you are… a new routine for pet rabbits. Wonder if Letterman knows about this? I would still like to know what’s involved with the training for bunny dressage, so will scout this out and let you know in a later post. Saty tuned!
Oh yes, if you would like another smile, check out the “Colliewoood Films“ video (pun intended!) about sheep herding with a Border Collie dog. Very interesting to watch handler and dog round up the sheep from far-flung hills. Now that’s a feat!
