Your Pet and Separation Anxiety
If your pet becomes upset whenever you must leave, your pet may have separation anxiety.
One of the first things to do is to check to see if the “acting out” is actually due to separation anxiety or if it a symptom of something else. We suggest the excellent behavior tip sheet found on the HSUS site which can help you to determine if your pet is suffering from separation anxiety or not.
Great Book Suggestion:
Dr. Nicholas Dodman of Tufts Univeristy, a recent guest on Good Morning America, has just written a book on this subject to discuss what he believes to be the number one solution to this heart-wrenching problem. His book, “The Well Adjusted Dog“ provides seven steps for dog owners to follow. Dr. Dodman feels the most important step is proper leadership skills which will help with separation anxiety and a host of other dog behavioral problems… such as dogs lunging or jumping at people, or barking at every dog it passes along a walkway.
