While those people in the northern climes start to pump iron and increase their intake of Vitamin D and calcium to get ready for the lack of sun during the winter months, pet owners should be very careful not to drop any tablets on the floor. All medications and supplements should be safely tucked away in cabinets!

According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center even small doses of Vitamin D derivatives such as calcipotriene and calcitriol can cause life-threatening spikes in blood calcium levels in pets. Clinical signs of exposure—including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased urination and thirst due to kidney failure—often don’t occur for more than 24 hours after ingestion.
