Homemade Bird Treats
True birders like to make their own bird-feeding treats…
With the onset of colder weather and the thought for many of us of staying indoors a lot more, we once again prepare for the enjoyment our winter fly-in visitors.
This is the time when bird-lovers make special trips to their favorite birder store for supplies. They check out the latest and greatest bird-feeding stations (bird table for our UK friends) to the bird feed most likely to attract our favorite bird.
But you know you don’t have to go overboard though so many new things appeal for if you are a known bird-lover, you know that you can count on a variety of bird-related gifts at Christmas, from suet-and-seed cages or squirrel chasing devices. For the died-in-the-wool birder, making your own bird-feeding treats gives you extra satisfaction in helping your feathered friends through the chill of winter. Here is a fun and simple recipe for a bird treat that all the family will enjoy making that is bound to attract many fine flyers!
Pine Cone Snack for Birds

1 pine cone
2 tbls peanut butter or fat (like Crisco)
1/2 cup bird seed
1 twist tie or ribbon for hanging
Spread peanut butter or fat all over the pine cone. Then roll the pine cone in seeds so that the seeds cover the entire cone. Finally secure a tie to one end and hang it either in your bird cage or outside for your birds to enjoy.
