You are not alone if you suffer an allergy to cats. Cat owners may sneer with contempt at your obvious weakness, but for the allergy sufferer, being around a cat can be a serious concern. In order to visit a cat-owner friend, the allergy sufferer needs to take inhalers, antehistamines or suffer a cough, itchy eyes, running nose, or a bout of asthma… hence the reason they do not visit often or for long…

Visitors to a home where cats reign can usually expect to find rugs, fine blankets or sheepskins draped around the furniture to allow the reigning cat(s) to recline in comfort. There are also scratching posts, stairs to windows, and oodles of bowls filled with bits of food and water, usually found in direct traffic paths. Courtesy to the visitor (non-cat owner) is to remove a covering from the furniture to allow you a sort of hair-free seat. Usually, and as soon as this happens, the family feline will immediately choose to sit on that (now bare) furniture to ensure that the feline-less visitor does not escape being covered in cat hair from head to foot… 99 times out of 10, as an old friend used to quip!

And… have you noticed that most cat owners do not wear black or dark colors (unless their kitty is a dark color)? They never wear corderoy and always tend to wear fluffy sweaters, which on closer inspection, could actually be made from cat hair. You on the other hand always seems to wear the wrong clothes… that provide cats and their owners with greatest amusement when seeing you as a walking cat-hair mummy.

What to do?
According to comedian Adam Bloom, the best way to prevent being smothered in cat hair the cat-less visitor should bring a large roll of cello packing tape… and wrap it around the cats!

Okay… a joke! But on the serious side, cat owners really should know that being allergic to cats does not equal not liking cats. Just because a person suffers from allergies to cats does not mean that they are not a cat lovers. While health reasons may prevent them from being able to keep cats, they may really appreciate cats a lot. So please, cut your feline-less friends some slack when they visit over the holidays… and let there be peace between all.
