Pachyderm Dreams
Love Comes in All Sizes and Shapes
As new wildlife abounds with the bloom of spring, the sights and sounds of baby creatures being introduced to their habitat by patient, or in many cases, testy parents, abound. On any given day a stroll along the river’s edge brings smiles and delight as the baby birds take to the air or water. Elephants and their natural habitat do not come readily to mind… unless, like me, you picked up a copy of the book called Hannah’s Dream, by exciting new author Diane Hammond.
Then, your mind would wander and wonder about elephants, elephant habitats and elephants in captivity. Hammond’s humorous book is a page-turner from the get-go… the story revolves around a Dunkin’ Donut-eating, artistic Asian elephant named Hannah and involves a variety of characters including a pet pig (like George Clooney’s) called Miles.
For therapy against boredom, Hannah learns to paint pictures (like Ruby the elephant) and also tries her hand trunk) at playing the drums! This touching and uplifting story, based on a real-life experience of an elephant called Shirley and her friend and keeper of 22 years called Solomon James Jr. A is a great read for all ages.
