Oprah Should Feature “Hannah’s Dream”…

Having just read “Hannah’s Dream” about an elephant that is rescued from a failing zoo, it was very timely and a great coincidence to see an “Amazing Animal” segment on Oprah today that was all about Tarra, a 35 year old Asian elephant and her faithful sidekick, Bella the dog who reside in an 1800 acre habitat in Hohenwald, Tennessee where sick and elderly female elephants are brought to retire.

How cool is this?
It was even more coincidental to discover that the book “Hannah’s Dream” by Diane Hammond is actually based on a true story about an elephant and her keeper who end up at this actual elephant habitat in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Truly Amazing Animals…
The story on Oprah spoke of the amazing devotion between these two unlikely friends… a dog and an elephant. While elephants are very social they usually like to keep with their own kind. Bella therefore had a lot to overcome in befriending Tarra… the other elephants in the habitat gave her a rough time and clearly showed this with physical displays of displeasure.

Bella held her ground and today is completely accepted by the group! Tarra has shown her friendship and loyalty as well, by being a constant visitor to the office compound when Bella was kept indoors for three weeks with severe back problems. Today they roam happily together throughout the habitat, elephant and dog in greatest harmony.

What a great tie-in Hannah’s Dream would be to Oprah’s feature!
It would be great if Oprah were to read Hammond’s book and then put it on her list of must-reads, as we feel it is really worthy of being highlighted as it is well-written, humorous and engaging for people of all ages… and one more way for Oprah to help to raise public awareness about the plight of animals in captivity and how we can help them.
