Three Dog Life…
Three family dogs provide solace…
It always amazes me, even after all this time of it happening, how books leap into my hands just when I need them.
I almost never go into a bookstore looking for a specific book… instead I go in with a feeling, of need.
A need for an answer, a need for inspiration, a need for information, though I may not know what that information is exactly. And, in almost every instance, the perfect book finds me.
I leisurely roam around, glancing at titles, until the perfect book jumps out at me, almost leaping into my hands. Such was the case this week when the book “A Three Dog Life” by Abigail Thomas appeared.
The title all by itself is intriguing. The story is filled with lovely humor, but it is no light read. It is a memoir, one that author Stephen King feels is “The best memoir I have ever read… sad, terrifying and scorchingly honest. This book is a punch to the heart.” I concur.
The title… “A Three Dog night” is used to sum up the intensity of Thomas’ life experience, and explained by way of Australian folklore/history which tells us that Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights, the coldest being a “three dog night”. The book however is neither about Australia nor Australian folklore.
It is also is not about pets per se, the story involves family pets. The pet lover community can quickly relate however… with how important family pets are to healing, comfort and a happier life. It is Thomas’ memoir of her love-filled romance and marriage that was greatly challenged when her husband got hit by a car while walking their pet dog. The story is how Abigail copes with this disaster to find humor, friendship and strength, with the company of her three pet dogs, Carolina, Harry and Rosie.
If you are having a tough day, a tough stretch, or a tough life, Abigail Thomas’ memoir may just be the balm and inspiration you need. It is heartwarming and . I cannot say enough good things about this insightful writing and especially like the candid and thought provoking comments made, despite his brain damage, by her husband and noted throughout the memoir - a fascinating read!
