You may not be smarter than a fifth-grader but in some cases, your dog may even be as smart as a four year old child!

When getting in a late walk last night, we came across a beautiful two-month-old Sheltie named Lola. She was bright, sweet and so inquisitive. Her owner told us how smart she was already and as a result of this intelligence, was already being quite manipulative.

We could see that despite this and her tender age, she was well trained and behaved. She was just a delight and we look forward to seeing her and her pet-people again soon.

According to Stanley Coren, a dog expert and professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia, the average dog has the mental abilities of a 2-year-old child. This of course will not come as a surprise to most dog owners.

A language-development test concluded that the average dog can learn 165 words, including signals and gestures, which is similar to a 2-year-old child.  What is more, dogs in the top 20% of intelligence can learn up to 250 words!

More incredible are the results of another study which showed that a dog’s basic math ability is similar to 3 and 4 year olds. Not sure if most dog owners would know or believe this, but it is fascinating.

Dr. Coren’s list of top dogs, in order of their doggy IQ are:
1.    Border collies
2.    Poodles
3.    German shepherds
4.    Golden retrievers
5.    Dobermans
6.    Shetland sheepdogs
7.    Labrador retrievers
