Humpy-backed Camels welcomed at church…

Imagine… Noah… ark… animals! Lots and lots of animals. Okay… now think of 2009. Imagine camels, llamas, caribou, and porcupies on the cathedral steps in New York… and 3500 people of all religions with other asorted pets. Nothing if not interesting!

With the fantastic past write-ups about the Blessing of the Animals, (which coincides with the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and World Pet Day), one’s mind conjurs up all sorts of pictures when heading out to a local church or retreat to participate or take in this annual pet blessing event.

While pet lovers and their array of the usual doestic pets such as cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, turtles, snakes, rabbits and birds are the main attendees at local (not NY) blessings, one might also expect to see horses, cows, sheep, goats, deer, or even raccoons depending upon the venue and country. Here is some other information about other pet blessings not associated with St. Francis of Assisi. Here is an example of this special pet celebration held this past week…

The actual feast day of St. Francis of Assisi is October 4th but the blessing is held on different dates around the U.S.  St. John the Devine is the church in NY where the festival is held every year. Check here for a video of an actual pet blessing or here for other write-ups about pet blessings.
