People Caring for Pets in Disaster
Pets do matter to people, even when human lives are endangered!
Having a pet website may seem like a frivolous thing to many. In relation to all the famine and disaster in the world and the worry about basic human survival… well yes, a pet blog is hugely insignificant. But it is incredibly interesting to know that even amidst major disasters, that money, effort and emotions are also spent to rescue animals… even by the very people whose lives are in peril from whatever natural disaster is plaguing them.
Typhoon Ketsana caused some of the worst flooding in Philippines’ history. One animal rescue worker has described the extent of the suffering as being “50 times bigger” than Katrina! IFAW’s specially-trained Rapid Water Rescue Team is feeding and rescuing stranded animals and helping the military deliver food to people. These floods, which at one point covered almost 80 percent of Manila, meant people having to relocate to the 260 plus camps around the city and taking their pets with them. With no means to feed or restrain their animals, these people are grateful for the many animal rescue services that came to their aid.
It is really moving to see the recent IFAW pet rescue video, about a pet rescue mission to the Philippines, produced by the IFAW group.
