Former 007 and Foie Gras

A very disturbing email came across my desk today… one that made me physically ill. It was contained in a petition to try to bring awareness about a very cruel industry in China, as a way to help to stop it. The industry? Pet fur for use in garments… pet fur from little puppies who are actually skinned alive! I could not watch the attached video and do not have enough words to condemn this cruelty.Filling out the petition form on-line is a start…

Managing Mange

Mangy pet? Help is at hand…

Mange… the dreaded skin disease that can occur in pets, causes great concern for pet owners. Once a death sentence for many pets, mange is now more easily diagnosed and treated. There are two types of mange which pet owners should know about… the most common type of mange is called demodectic mange, often referred to as read mange while the second type of mange is called sarcoptic mange in dogs or notoedric mange in cats.

Hooked on Phonics…

Email humor…
Every once in a while an email brings outright laughter… this was the case today when I read “Hooked on Phonics (From the diary of a Preschool Teacher).”  I know that all you pet lovers will get a kick out of this too… Enjoy!

Oprah Features Dog that is Elephant’s Best Friend!

Having just read “Hannah’s Dream” about an elephant that is rescued from a failing zoo, it was very timely and a great coincidence to see an “Amazing Animal” segment on Oprah today that was all about Tarra, a 35 year old Asian elephant and her faithful sidekick, Bella the dog who reside in an 1800 acre habitat in Hohenwald, Tennessee where sick and elderly female elephants are brought to retire.

Pachyderm Dreams

For therapy against boredom, Hannah learns to paint pictures (like Ruby the elephant) and also try’s her hand trunk) at playing the drums! This touching and uplifting story, based on a real-life experience of an elephant called Shirley and her friend and keeper of 22 years called Solomon James Jr. A is a great read for all ages. Check here for more info about Hannah’s Dream.
