Rent-a-Pet NOT Posh in Britain!

While pet rental appears to be popular in the US where FlexPetz now operates, (New York, Boston, San Diego and Los Angeles, there is an outcry in Britain led by Robert Brown MSP (Lib Dem, Glasgow Region) and championed by the Kennel Club as FlexPetz tries to expand their operations overseas.

For those people who would really love to have a pet around but for one reason or another cannot provide adequate full time care, this service could prove (and is proving) to be important. Is this wrong? Selfish? One just has to think of the excellent response to “visiting pets’ from the elderly and hospital shut-ins of all ages to understand the value of a part-time pet.

A recent survey suggests that 21% of pet owners in general bought their pet for companionship, compared to only 5% who have their pet for security. And 60% of single people in the UK say they buy pets for companionship and of this number 39% say they have replaced their partner with a pet! Yikes! Pet lovers who continually spend money on their special pets will not be surprised by the latest facts about pet ownership… the millions of cats and dogs, birds, horses, mice and other companion animals and the spending on pets which in 2007 reached $41.2-billion in total in the USA alone according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. Doggie Bachelor of Arts?

Not so Zeeke!… a puppy-in-training that belongs to JJ Coat, a Pre-Vet major and honors student of Ohio Northern University. Zeeke has become part of the alumni. JJ has chosen to prepare Zeeke to become a service dog, as her Honors Project. Zeeke’s training period is 16 months and JJ has been given special permission by the university administration to bring Zeeke onto the campus where he has become an instant celebrity. This has also given the university much-needed celebrity as well. We’re thinking there may be more Zeekes in future classes… ;-)
